Project Name: Trypanosomal Transport and Mitochondrial Effects of 2,5-bis(4-amidinophenyl)furan (DB-75)
Description: Investigations into the mechanisms of transport and trypanocidal action of DB-75 involving uptake by the P2 amino-purine transporter and other trypanosome-specific plasma membrane proteins as well as changes in mitochondrial membrane potential relating to trypanocidal activity.

Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine
School of Medicine
Expected Graduation Date: May, 2004
Project Name: Chemical Pathogenesis of Cerebral Sleeping Sickness
Description
: Studies will focus on the effect of acute and chronic infection on blood-brain barrier permeability, the effect of inflammatory molecule expression on parasite survival, host cellular disruption, progression of disease, and prognostic ability for treatment efficacy.

School of Pharmacy
Expected Graduation Date: May, 2005
Project Name:
Transport and Metabolism of New Potential Antimicrobial Prodrugs for 2,5-bis(4-amidinophenyl)furan (DB-75)

Description: Goals include the investigation of mechanisms of oral transport and bioactivation of several metabolites of the prodrug DB-289 via their ability to cross the epithelial barrier, along with studies of the major enzymes involved in the biotransformation.
