Surgical Pathology Fellowship
 
Program description: The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and UNC Hospitals offer a one-year training program in surgical pathology. The training program focuses on surgical pathology, with opportunities for complementary training in cytopathology, electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry and other specialized areas. Responsibilities include direct specimen preparation, participation in diagnosis of frozen sections and case signouts, review of outside consultations, and presentation of clinical conferences. The surgical pathology laboratory accessions over 23,000 specimens per year. Fellows are expected to pursue and complete research projects during their fellowship year.
 
Program requirements: Applicants must possess an M.D. degree and have at least two years of accredited residency training in anatomic pathology. Preference is given to those applicants who have completed an AP or AP/CP residency.
 
Stipends: Fellowship stipends are based on the trainee's number of years of postdoctoral training and the current UNC Hospitals' Housestaff salary scale.

Applications: The Standardized Application for Pathology Fellowships from the College of American Pathologists should be submitted, preferably in electronic form, by December 1 (19 months before start date of July 1) to Dr. William Funkhouser at the email address below. Letters of recommendation should be submitted by January 1 (18 months before start date). Interviews will be completed by February 28 (16 months before start date). Offers will be issued March 1 (16 months before start date).
