Hi, this is Avani from Nagpur, a city in central India famous for its oranges and extremely high temperatures.  I completed an M.B.B.S (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from Government Medical College and Hospital Nagpur, a marathon five and a half year undergraduate degree program in December 2003.  My search for “something interesting” landed me in the laboratory of Dr. Nobuyo Maeda in the Fall of 2004 and I started as a graduate student in Molecular and Cellular Pathology Ph.D. program in the summer of 2005.

I have been trying my hand at more than one thing in the lab, but now I have settled down with PPARg and trying to fit it in the scheme of fat distribution and glucose and lipid metabolism.  Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor g (PPARg), a nuclear hormone receptor is a key player in adipose tissue differentiation and distribution and glucose and lipid metabolism.  It is essential to clearly determine whether overall obesity or obesity in a specific depot is a more important determinant of insulin resistance and subsequent risk of metabolic syndrome. We are attempting to address this issue using the PPARg P465L/+ mice as a model for altered fat distribution.

Life outside the lab has been equally eventful.  I met my husband here in NC and we have just moved into our new condo.  Like a typical Indian, I am a big Cricket fan and love Hollywood movies and music.  My current hobby is learning Spanish.  I hope the interest remains long enough!
