Emily J. Smith
B.S., Zoology
North Carolina State University
Raleigh, NC

I was born in Brandon, Florida, but I spent most of my years growing up in the tiny town of Smithfield, North Carolina.  After I graduated high school, I attended Pfeiffer University (in the VILLAGE of Misenheimer) for a semester where I played softball until I transferred to NC State University.  I graduated from State with a B.S. in Zoology in 2007.

Before coming to UNC, I did some research as an undergraduate in a few different labs at The College of Veterinary Medicine's Research Building on NC State's campus.  In the first lab (Dr. Kenneth Adler), I studied the effects of an underlying collagen matrix on mucin secretion in malignant and normal human bronchial epithelial cell lines.  The next lab I worked in was that of Dr. Gregg Dean's, which studied the immunopathogenesis and prevention of HIV and FIV.  In the Dean lab, I helped concentrate FIV-PPr protein and purify p24-GST fusion protein for use in their FIV vaccination studies.  The last lab I was in before coming to UNC was that of Dr. Matthew Breen's, which studied cytogenetics and canine cancer.  In this lab, I worked along side Rachael Thomas, a postdoc with research interests in feline cytogenetics and soft-tissue sarcomas.

Since then, I have decided to work in the lab of Dr. David Kaufman to complete my Ph.D training.

My interests include: Buddy, my dog, good food, motivating myself to workout, listening to music, being outdoors, spending money I don't have, watching movies, and being a WOLFPACK FAN!
