and Application Procedures

Predoctoral Fellowships
Predoctoral candidates should apply directly to the University of North Carolina Graduate School and to the Molecular and Cellular Pathology Training Program of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Admission Requirements
Molecular and Cellular Pathology
The typical applicant to the Molecular and Cellular Pathology Ph.D. Program will have a bachelors degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, zoology, or related scientific discipline.  Rare applicants will have a degree in an unrelated non-scientific discipline.  However, these applicants are required to have accumulated credits in the appropriate undergraduate courses to qualify for admission.  Many, but not all, applicants possess 1-2 years of research experience at the time of application.  Admission decisions are made based upon the applicant's undergraduate record (courses and grades), GRE scores (no subject test required), letters of recommendation, and a personal statement of research interests.  Applicants that completed their undergraduate training at a foreign institution are required to provide TOEFL scores, as well as GRE scores.
Application Deadlines
The Molecular and Cellular Pathology program employs a rolling admissions process.  The  final deadline for submission of applications is set annually, but is typically April 1. During most years the incoming class for the Fall semester will fill by February/March.  Thus, early application is recommended (December/January).
Application for Admission
All applications to the UNC Graduate School are made using online application procedures.  The user-friendly, online application provided is faster and easier than completing a paper application, and provides for the prompt receipt and distribution of your application information. Individuals with special needs or internet access problems can request paper information via this site.  In addition to completing the Graduate School's online application, please complete the supplemental admission application required by the Molecular and Cellular Pathology Graduate Program.
