Biological & Biomedical Sciences Program
at the University of North Carolina
The Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program is the new, unified mechanism by which prospective students apply for graduate study in the biological or biomedical sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Students that are interested in any of the biological and biomedical sciences research areas (including pathobiology, mechansims of disease, and pathology) apply to the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program and are admitted to UNC with no formal commitment to any specific Ph.D. program.  After completing their first year of study, students leave the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program and matriculate into one of 12 participating Ph.D. programs (including Molecular and Cellular Pathology), after selecting a dissertation research laboratory and faculty preceptor.

For more information on the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program, please navigate to the BBSP website.

If you have a specific interest in the Molecular and Cellular Pathology Ph.D. program and questions about application to the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program, please contact Dr. William B. Coleman.

Admission Requirements
The typical applicant to the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program  will have a bachelors degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, zoology, or related scientific discipline.  Rare applicants will have a degree in an unrelated non-scientific discipline.  However, these applicants are required to have accumulated credits in the appropriate undergraduate courses to qualify for admission.  Many, but not all, applicants possess 1-2 years of research experience at the time of application.  Admission decisions are made based upon the applicant's undergraduate record (courses and grades), GRE scores (no subject test required), letters of recommendation, and a personal statement of research interests.  Applicants that completed their undergraduate training at a foreign institution are required to provide TOEFL scores, as well as GRE scores.
Application Deadlines
The Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program employs a rolling admissions process.  Applications will be accepted after Septmeber 7, 2007.  The final application deadline is March 15, 2008.  However, the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program Admissions Committees will begin reviewing applications in late December and all interview slots are likely to fill by February 15.  Additionally, full consideration for Graduate Fellowships from the UNC Graduate School requires that applications be submitted by January 1.
Therefore we urge you to submit your materials before January 15, 2008.
