I grew up in San Antonio, Texas and went to Texas A&M University for my undergraduate studies in microbiology.  During that time I was involved in food and water safety microbiology research, studying the effects of pH on microbial growth as well as the use of electron beam irradiation to inactivate bacterial replication.  After graduating with a B.S. in 2005, I began working on my M.S. in Public Health Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases at the George Washington University in Washingtin, D.C.  There I worked on the development of animal models for HIV using human cord blood stem cells.  I completed my M.S. in May of 2007.  In Fall of 2007, I enrolled in the Molecular and Cellular Pathology Ph.D. program at UNC.
