Matt Medlin
B.S., Biology
University of North Carolina
Chapel Hill, NC
I am a Tarheel born and bred, raised on Topsail Island.  I grew up working at my father’s fishing pier and later his tackle shop, East Coast Sports.  After graduating high school I attended UNC Chapel Hill as an undergraduate where I played rugby for the UNC-RFC and helped captained the team to its first national sweet sixteen appearance.  I graduated with a B.S. in biology.  I then worked for Vail Resorts in Colorado running chairlifts and skiing whenever possible.  After a season I moved back to Chapel Hill and worked as a technician in Dr. Chris Mack’s lab for about three years before joining the department as a graduate student.  The Mack lab investigates the mechanisms that regulate smooth muscle cell differentiation.  My studies focus on the regulation of the small GTPase RhoA and the role that plays in smooth muscle.  If I could have any job other than the one I have now I would like to be a motorcycle daredevil.  I’m an avid poker player, fantasy football enthusiast and amateur carpenter.  Most of my time outside of the lab is spent with my wife Crystal and my dogs Elvis and Cash.
