I am originally
from Charleston,
South Carolina, and if you have never visited I highly recommend making
a trip there. In 2004, I graduated from Furman
University with a B.S. in biology.
For those who have never heard of Furman, it is a small liberal arts college
located in Greenville, S.C., which is in the northwestern part of the state.
As an undergraduate, I worked for two years in a microbiology lab on the
River
Basin Research Initiative (RBRI). The project involved students
from the biology, chemistry, and earth and environmental science departments
to study different aspects of the river systems in upstate S.C. In
the micro lab, we did sampling for the Department of Health and Environmental
Control, examining levels of coliform and E. coli at different sites
along some of the rivers that were involved in the study. We also
collected different antibiotic-resistant bacteria and characterized them
by trying to identify the type of bacteria and what antibiotics they were
resistant to. In the fall of 2004, I joined the Molecular
and Cellular Pathology program at UNC-CH, where I am working with Dr.
Alisa Wolberg, who works with blood coagulation. Several days
before joining the program, I was married in Charleston to my wife Jenn,
who also attends UNC-CH, working in the chemistry department towards her
Ph.D.
