Marc J. Mass, Ph.D. Memorial Distinguished Lecture
The Marc J. Mass, Ph.D. Memorial Distingished Lecture honors the memory of Dr. Marc J. Mass, who died unexpectedly on November 10, 2001.  Dr. Mass was a graduate of the Molecular and Cellular Pathology Ph.D. Program, having trained with Dr. David G. Kaufman, completing his Ph.D. in 1980.  After a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, Dr. Mass joined the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory of the US Environmental Protection Agency (Research Triangle Park, NC).  Most recently, Dr. Mass served as the Acting Branch Chief for the Molecular Toxicology Branch in the Environmental Carcinogenesis Divison at the USEPA, and held an adjunct appointment to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of UNC-Chapel Hill.  Following his death, the Marc J. Mass, Ph.D. Memorial Fund was established to support an annual lecture given by a prominant scientist chosen by the Molecular and Cellular Pathology Graduate Students.
Career Pathways for Experimental Pathologists
The Career Pathways for Experimental Pathologists series was initiated in 2003 as an opportunity for the Molecular and Cellular Pathology graduate students to invite a scientist to visit the institution to discuss career opportunities and professional development.  Invited scientists typically occupy professional positions outside of the traditional academic setting.  This allows students to learn about various career pathways and alternative career choices for experimental pathologists.
Excellence in Science Series
The Excellence in Science Series was started in 1999 as an opportunity for the Molecular and Cellular Pathology graduate students to host a seminar by a scientist of their choosing.  Individual graduate students nominate prominent scientists from their respective fields of study.  Subsequently, nominations are discussed among the graduate student body and an appropriate speaker is selected.  While visiting UNC, the selected scientist has the opportunity to interact with the students to discuss research, career opportunities, and professional development.
